Hope in Action/Answers

A cave full of copies that made the skeptics blink.

What Are the Dead Sea Scrolls?

In 1947 a shepherd threw a rock into a cave near Qumran and hit a jar. Inside were manuscripts a thousand years older than the Hebrew copies we had been using. When scholars compared Isaiah, the text was stunningly stable. The God who speaks also knows how to keep a book.

A thousand-year gap, closed

Before the Scrolls, critics could claim the Old Testament had been edited beyond recognition between the prophets and the Middle Ages. Then we got copies from around the time of Jesus. The Great Isaiah Scroll, in particular, matches the later Masoretic text in substance with a faithfulness that surprised people who wanted a different story.

That does not prove every debate is over. It does prove the Bible in your hand is not a medieval rewrite of a lost original.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.”

Isaiah 40:8 (NKJV)

Jesus read this book. So can you

When Jesus stood in the synagogue and read Isaiah, He was not guessing at a corrupted scroll. He was announcing Himself from a text God had kept. The same Spirit who inspired it still applies it.

Come hear Isaiah land on Jesus — not as a theory, as a Person.

“And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor…””

Luke 4:17-18 (NKJV)
