Hope in Action/Answers

Thousands. That is how you catch a rewrite.

How Many New Testament Manuscripts Do We Have?

If you only had one copy of a book, a scribe could change it and you would never know. The New Testament does not have that problem. We have an embarrassing wealth of Greek manuscripts, plus early translations and quotations. That is how historians reconstruct a text. It is also why the “the church rewrote the Bible” claim has nowhere to hide.

More copies than Caesar, Plato, or Homer — by a mile

The numbers are not close. Homer’s Iliad is a well-attested ancient book. The New Testament dwarfs it — thousands of Greek manuscripts, fragments within decades of the originals, and church fathers quoting so much of the New Testament that you could almost rebuild it from their letters.

Variants exist. That is what you get with handwritten copies. The vast majority are spelling and word order. No variant erases the death and resurrection of Jesus.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.”

Isaiah 40:8 (NKJV)

God did not whisper once and hope for the best

Inspiration got the Word into history. Providence got it through history. You can open a Bible in Titusville and know you are reading what the apostles meant.

We will not ask you to check your brain at the door. We will ask you to let the Word that survived empires still speak to you.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”

Matthew 24:35 (NKJV)
