Hope in Action/Answers

Joshua did not march around a metaphor.

Was Jericho a Real City?

People reduce Jericho to a children’s song. The Bible describes a fortified city that fell at God’s word. The mound is still there, west of the Jordan, with collapsed mudbrick and burn layers that archaeologists have argued over for a century. Archaeologists who take the text seriously have spent years walking that tell and arguing that the evidence fits Joshua more closely than the skeptics wanted.

A city that burned, with walls that fell outward

Jericho is one of the oldest continuously discussed sites in biblical archaeology. Kathleen Kenyon’s dating made many textbooks say Joshua was too late. Other archaeologists have pointed to pottery, grain jars, and a collapsed wall system that look like a short siege and a fire — which is exactly the kind of end Joshua 6 describes.

Honest people still debate layers and dates. What is not honest is pretending there was no Jericho.

“So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat.”

Joshua 6:20 (NKJV)

The point was never the bricks. It was the God who keeps a promise

Jericho is the firstfruits of a God who fights for His people. You do not have to become an excavator to trust Him. You do get to know the story is planted in real dirt.

If God could bring down a wall, He can still bring down the thing that has you stuck. Come hear that as more than a Sunday-school tale.

“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days.”

Hebrews 11:30 (NKJV)
