He did not leave Himself a modest off-ramp.

Did Jesus Claim to Be God?

A popular story says Jesus never claimed deity — that later fans upgraded a rabbi. Read Him. The people who heard Him in real time reached for stones, not because He was vague, but because He was clear. He applied the name of God to Himself and then proved the claim with a resurrection.

Before Abraham was, I AM

In John 8:58 Jesus did not say He was older than Abraham. He took the divine name from the burning bush. The crowd understood. They picked up stones for blasphemy. He also said, “I and My Father are one,” forgave sins that only God can forgive, and received worship that only God should receive.

A prophet says, “Thus says the Lord.” Jesus said, “But I say to you.” That is not a style difference. That is a claim.

“Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.””

John 8:58 (NKJV)

The resurrection is the signature on the claim

Anyone can say they are God. Jesus staked it on walking out of a grave, then let Thomas put his hands on the evidence. “My Lord and my God” was not corrected. It was welcomed.

If you have been told the deity of Christ is a later invention, open John this week. Then come ask your questions with a church that still calls Him Lord — because He said so first.

“And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!””

John 20:28 (NKJV)
