Hope in Action/Answers

Not a biological child. The eternal Word.

Can God Have a Son?

If “son” meant God took a wife, Christians would reject it as loudly as anyone. That is not the claim. The Word was with God and was God in the beginning. Son names relationship and exact likeness, not romance in heaven. The incarnation is God adding humanity, not God starting a family tree.

Eternal, not conceived like us

John 1:1 sits before Bethlehem. The Son did not begin in Mary. He entered the world through Mary. Colossians calls Him the image of the invisible God. Hebrews calls Him the express image of the Father’s person. That is identity, not biology.

Calling Jesus the Son is how Scripture protects two truths at once: He is distinct from the Father, and He is as fully God as the Father. No rivals. No lesser deity.

“No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”

John 1:18 (NKJV)

The Son is how you actually know God

A God who cannot come near is a God you can only fear from a distance. The Father sent the Son so you could see His heart. That is not God being less holy. That is God being more gracious than a distant throne.

If the word Son has been a stumbling block, we understand. Come talk it through. We will not mock the objection. We will show you Jesus.

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:14 (NKJV)
