Hope in Action/Answers

God regulated a broken world on the way to setting captives free.

Does the Bible Support Slavery?

People have abused the Bible to defend what the Bible itself explodes. Ancient slavery was not one thing, and it was not the race-based chattel system some later centuries invented and then tried to baptize. Even so, the question is fair: why didn’t God drop a modern abolitionist pamphlet in Exodus? Because He was forming a people in a brutal world — and planting seeds that would crack the system from the inside.

Kidnapping a man is a sin in the Law

Exodus 21:16 condemns stealing a person and selling him. First Timothy lists kidnappers — slave traders — among the unholy. That is not support. That is indictment. The Exodus itself is God walking a nation out of bondage and telling them never to forget what it felt like.

When Scripture talks to slaves and masters in the Roman world, it is addressing people inside a system, not blessing the system as the Father’s dream. Philemon is a time bomb under that world: receive him no longer as a slave, but as a brother.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Galatians 3:28 (NKJV)

Luke 4:18 is still the mission

Jesus announced liberty to the captives. The gospel creates a family where image-bearers cannot stay property. Christians have failed this. The Book has not. Hope in action means we tell the truth about both.

If this wound sits close to your history, you are welcome here. We will not defend the indefensible. We will point to a Savior who still sets people free.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”

Luke 4:18 (NKJV)
