Hope in Action/Answers

He is not a legend who wandered into a stained-glass window.

Was Jesus a Real Person in History?

A surprising number of people have been told Jesus is a myth, like a Greek god with better branding. Historians — including many who do not worship Him — are not confused about this. A Jewish teacher named Jesus lived in first-century Galilee, gathered disciples, and was crucified under Pontius Pilate. The debate is not whether He existed. The debate is who He is.

Even His opponents did not call Him imaginary

Tacitus, Josephus, Pliny, and the Jewish Talmud all refer to Jesus or to His followers in ways that make no sense if He never lived. The Gospels read like memoirs with geography, names, and embarrassing details you do not invent if you are building a superhero.

Myth theories have to ignore the first century to work. The people closest to the events did not. They named witnesses. They named places. They named a governor you can find in other records.

“Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us.”

Luke 1:1-2 (NKJV)

History gets you to the man. Faith receives the Lord.

You can be historically confident that Jesus lived and still keep Him at arm’s length. The Gospels will not let you stay there for long. He forgives sin, calms storms, and walks out of a grave. A real man did that.

If you have treated Jesus as a fable, start over with the text. Then come sit with a church that talks about Him in the present tense — because He is not a memory. He is alive.

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:14 (NKJV)
